Ingredients
  

Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Decoration
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries sliced
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 tbsp corn syrup optional for glaze

Method
 

Prepare the Cake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Make the Frosting
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until well combined.
  3. Add milk and vanilla extract, and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.
Decorate the Cake
  1. Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
  2. Arrange the sliced strawberries in the shape of stripes and place blueberries in the top left corner to create the flag design.
  3. If desired, brush the strawberries with corn syrup for a glossy finish.

Notes

This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving.
