Ingredients
  

Burger Mixture
  • 2 cans black beans rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or gluten-free alternative
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for cooking
  • 1 large egg or flax egg for vegan option
Toppings
  • 4 slices cheese optional
  • 4 buns burger buns whole grain or gluten-free
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 1/2 cup avocado sliced or mashed
  • 1/4 cup ketchup for serving
  • 1/4 cup mustard for serving

Method
 

Prepare the Burger Mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
  2. Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and egg (or flax egg). Mix until well combined.
Form and Cook the Burgers
  1. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are heated through and have a nice crust.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. Place each patty on a bun and top with lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese (if using), ketchup, and mustard.
  2. Serve immediately and enjoy your Memorial Day feast!
