Prepare the Burger Mixture
- In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
- Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and egg (or flax egg). Mix until well combined.
Form and Cook the Burgers
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
- Heat olive oil in a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are heated through and have a nice crust.
Assemble the Burgers
- Place each patty on a bun and top with lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese (if using), ketchup, and mustard.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your Memorial Day feast!
